Boating Pyramid Lake: A Practical Guide

With 125,000 acres of warm, salty water and hardly a crowd in sight, Pyramid Lake might be the best-kept boating secret in Nevada. Here’s what to know before you launch.

The water

Pyramid Lake’s water is warm and slightly salty — a legacy of the ancient inland sea it came from — which makes it unusually pleasant for watersports. Skiing, wakeboarding, tubing and paddleboarding are all at home here, and on a calm summer morning you can have miles of glassy water essentially to yourself. Most activity happens along the west shore, where the designated recreation areas are; the east side is quieter, reached by unpaved roads, and better admired than launched from.

The rules that matter

• Permits: the lake sits on Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe land, and boating and day-use permits from the Tribe are required. Sort them out before your trip.
• Anaho Island: the big island is a National Wildlife Refuge protecting a large American White Pelican colony. Landing is prohibited, and boats must keep at least 500 feet from its shore.
• Weather: the high desert can flip from glass to whitecaps quickly. Check the forecast before you launch and keep an eye on the sky.
